Mrs. Koenig's Summer

Here are a few photos of what I've been doing the last few months. I had more time to relax, play, and work on projects than I ever had before, because this was the first summer that I've had off from work ever sense I was 15 years old! Ouch!

This summer, I hung out with friends and family, read, spent time outdoors, and went on a mini trip to Idaho to visit a dear friend. I also got to see my little baby nephew grow and change (which was my favorite part!). Enjoy the photos below:

Spending time with family...

Mini family reunion

Hike with my cousin

Shopping with my mom

My dads truck show

Hanging outside with my husband

Spending time with some friends...

Just spending quality time with girlfriends

Spending time with my little nephew...

Trip to Idaho....

At the airport, I saw Terry Porter (if your parents liked to watch the Blazers during the late 80's/early 90's, then they will enjoy this photo)!

Hiked up some foothills

Went to a free MC Hammer concert. Your parents may find this entertaining :)

This fall I plan to read as much as possible, jog in a few events, and watch football (well, I will most likely just hear it in the background). GO DUCKS!

I'm looking forward to reading/hearing about your summer!

SNACKS & WATER BOTTLES

Each day I will allow some time for a healthy snack. Some examples of what students can bring are crackers, fruit, vegetables, cheese, etc. Students CANNOT bring candy, cake, cookies, etc. for a snack.

One more thing to add to your school list....a water bottle! Please bring a water bottle every day to school. I strongly encourage students to drink water throughout the day. I don't allow students to get up during class to use the fountain, so please be prepared to come each day with a water bottle in hand! Why should you bring a water bottle? Check out the link that's titled "Drinking Water and Children."

Book Report - Last Speech of the School Year!

Free Choice Book Report

There are no kids on the planet who are better presenters than C-1’s fifth graders. . . That means YOU! As a special reward for your wonderfulness, your final speech/book report/project for this year can be on any book you choose, 100 pages or more! Here’s your chance to choose a genre’ you really love! Historical Fiction? Science Fiction? Non-Fiction? Realistic Fiction? Humor? Mystery? Biography? Fantasy? Poetry? Mythology? Anything!

Here are the only guidelines you’ll need:
 FIND A BOOK AND START READING.
 Make your presentation at least 2 minutes long.
 Have it MEMORIZED. (Brief note cards are OK, but don’t
just “read.”)
*Ideas of what to include are attached.
 Practice, practice, practice until it feels comfortabl
and smooth.
 Include “Something Special” in your report. (See below)
 Complete the “Speech Practice Form” to turn in on report
day.

Something Special
Anything you come up with would be fine, but here are some suggestions:

 Make a mobile with events, characters, and settings from
your book.
 Create a poster that makes others want to read your book.
 Design a diorama.
 Come in costume as a character from your book.
 Make a puppet.
 Create a collage of images that represent your book.
 Paint a scene or setting.
 Build a model scene or setting.
 Create a sculpture.
 Try paper mache’.
 Make a pop up book.
 Design an alternate book cover.
 Make your presentation in PowerPoint form.
 Use Publisher or Word to create fliers or handouts about
your book.
 Film your presentation in video format. Introduce it to
us, and show it!
 Bring artifacts or objects important in your book.
 Create a timeline of events.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: ___________________________ will be ready to present on Thursday, June 9th. (Half the class, chosen by random drawing, will present that day, and the other half on Friday, June 10th.)
Wow! That’s MORE THAN A MONTH to prepare! I KNOW we’ll be ready!

Straub Nature Kids Class

Second through fifth graders can learn about the industrious little pika that lives high in Oregon’s mountains, and how it is being affected by our changing climate in a FREE after-school class offered by the Friends of Straub Environmental Learning Center. Children will learn about how pikas survive in their rocky homes during harsh winter conditions, what they eat, and their role in the food chain. The class is taught by Bobbie Snead.

The class for second and third graders is on Thursday, January 13, 2011.
The class for fourth and fifth graders is on Thursday, January 20, 2011.

The classes run from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Straub Environmental Learning Center, 1320 A St. NE, next to Olinger Pool, near North Salem High School.

The class is free but registration is required. To register, call Alexandra at 503-391-4145 or register at alexandra@fselc.org.

The class is part of the Nature Kids series sponsored by the Friends of Straub Environmental Learning Center.
