Book Exchange

~Winter Party~

On Friday, December 18th, (our last day of school before vacation), we will be having a little party at school!

The day will consist of wrapping gifts, the all school "Sing-a-Long," a book exchange and a movie (with treats).

I am asking your child to buy a book for the book exchange, keeping the expenses at no more that $5-$10 total. I want to emphasize the joy of giving to others, not expense. Please do not spend over $10. I would like each book to be "student" wrapped. :0) Please do no send the gifts (books) before Thursday, Dec. 17th.

I love teaching your children and look forward to having a wonderful time celebrating with each other!

Happy Holidays from Mrs. Koenig

Vivid Vocabulary Requirements - Sent home today

Vivid Vocabulary Requirements

• Your first vivid vocabulary word is _________________________________________________.
• You are to do the following by Friday, November 20th:
o Write the word large at the top of the paper (at least 2 inches). Use a dictionary first to write the definition under the word (if you can’t find the word in the dictionary, you can use the internet).
o Color the word so it stands out (block letters work well).
o Draw a picture showing a scene of what the word means (3-D pictures will get you more points-use scrap booking supplies, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, construction paper, Cheerios, etc to make it stand out)
o Write a sentence using your vocabulary word.( On the bottom)
o Practice saying your word, definition and sentence because you will need to make an oral presentation to the class after Thanksgiving Break.
o Bring your word in on Friday morning the teacher assistant will put it up on the “Vivid Vocabulary” board.

**It is important to be neat, careful and try to be creative as you work on this project. It is always a good idea to discuss this with your family and you can get some help from them on this one. I encourage family participation for this project. The main idea is to build your vocabulary so you will learn new and interesting words.

*Turn this paper into the homework basket on Friday with a parent signature.

Island Project 2009

Name________________ Partner’s Name_______________
Date____________ Due Date: October 12th

Imaginative Island Criteria Sheet

You and your partner will need to design an imaginative island map. Here is your chance for teamwork and imagination! This map is to be created using an interesting theme, and it must contain a variety of geographic features and locations which relate to a person, place or thing. A good reference to use would be our school atlases, your notes, or the internet. The final copy will be colored neatly and contain the required elements. Make sure spelling is correct. You and your partner will be graded on each of the required elements as well as overall visual appeal. This project is due Tuesday, October 12th. You will only have four class times to work on the project, so each time will need to be used wisely. If possible, it would be a great idea to meet with your partner sometime after school. You and your partner will share this project on Tuesday, October 12th or Wednesday, October 13th. Half of the class will present each day.

Required Elements
• Title (This should reflect your map theme).
• Latitude and longitude lines with clear labels (grid).
• Five labeled cities. One labeled capital city.
• Ocean is named.
• A scale that is clearly labeled.
• Compass Rose
• A legend, which include 6 or more symbols for the following features:* indicates a required feature:

bay cave *mountain *lake
*river stream railroad dam
inlet volcano airport
*peninsula bridge road

• Two or more regions from the following choices (The geographic features and regions should be named):

Swamp Mountains
Desert Plateau
Plains Grassland
Forest

Make a SMART choice when picking your partner. It would be great to work with a friend, but both of you will need to work together, and both of you will be presenting this project. The 4 class times that you will have to work on these are 9/28, 10/2, 10/5, & 10/9. It would be a good idea to exchange phone numbers with your partner. :0)

Planner's

Starting this Friday (9/25) I will be checking student planners. Parents need to sign planners on Thurdays (the same day that the R.A.H. homework is sent home).

R.A.H (Read At Home) & Reading Worksheet

R.A.H. Forest Ridge is starting a school wide at home reading program, R.A.H. Each Thursday, students will bring home a bookmark/reading log to track their reading at home. This will help encourage kids to become better readers and promote reading outside of school.

Today they took home their reading log and it's due on Tuesday. We didn't send them home on Thursday because we wanted them to all hear about it at the assembly. After today, students will always receive their reading log on Thursday and it will be due on Tuesday (so they won't HAVE to read on Wednesday's, but I do encourage it).

Students need to read for at least 20 minutes. They can read to themselves, to a parent and/or sibling, or a parent can read to them!

Reading Worksheet
We will be practicing/working together on the reading worksheets in class for a few weeks before I send home the reading worksheet. I will be sending home the first reading worksheet on Thursday, October 1st, along with the R.A.H. homework. I encourage students to work on these with parents. They will also be due the following Tuesday.

What a Great Looking Class! :0)

Headphones

It would be nice if each student had their own set of earbud headphones to use while on the computer. Last year we had so much trouble with the ones here at school breaking. If you are able to provide headphones, please label them and place them in a zip lock bag, which should also be labeled. Thanks for your help!

SNACKS

Each day I will allow some time for a healthy snack. Some examples of what students can bring are crackers, fruit, vegetables, cheese, etc. Students CANNOT bring candy, cake, cookies, etc. for a snack.

Tuesday, September 01, 2009

Water Bottles!

One more thing to add to your school list....a water bottle! Please bring a water bottle every day to school. I strongly encourage students to drink water throughout the day. I don't allow students to get up during class to use the fountain, so please be prepared to come each day with a water bottle in hand! Why should you bring a water bottle? Check out the link that's titled "Drinking Water and Children."

More summer pics!

After summer school I went to a conference in Seattle with some teachers. We had a lot of fun!

When I got back from Seattle, I took a friend up to North Fork :0)

In-between these activities, I've been hanging out with my husband (he's building a shed), taking more classes (the photo below is of a class that I took at Mission Park, we road the Wheatland Ferry), and I've actually been texting Tom! Yes, you read that right...Tom knows how to TEXT! Here is a wonderful photo of him and his new granddaughter.

What a cutie pie!

I also went to visit a friend of mine and his wife. They had a beautiful baby boy about three weeks ago.

Mrs. Koenig's Summer so Far....

My summer started off with an overnight trip to the beach with some girlfriends. We shopped till we dropped and ate until we burst! :0)

The last week of June I attended a class with many "teacher" friends. It was nice to learn and spend time with each other.

The afternoon our week long class ended, my family (on my mom's side) went camping in Washington and had a great time together!

The day after we got back from camping, I started teaching summer school. Yipee!

The weekend of the 4th of July, I went to the Civil War Reenactment (same park where we went to "Down By the Riverside") and I spent 4th of July with my husband's family.

Free Choice Oral Book Report

Below is a format of what I will be looking for when students give their presentations on June 9th & June 10th. I have been over this with the class 3-4 times now and they were assigned this report about 3 weeks ago. This is a project that needs to be done at home.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Choice Book Report

There are no kids on the planet who are better presenters than C-1’s fifth graders. . . That means YOU! You’ve been doing fabulous reports and presentations for YEARS now. As a special reward for your wonderfulness, your final book report/project for this year can be on any book you choose, 100 pages or more! Here’s your chance to choose a genre’ you really love! Historical Fiction? Science Fiction? Non-Fiction? Realistic Fiction? Humor? Mystery? Biography? Fantasy? Poetry? Mythology? Anything!

You already know what needs to be included in a book report presentation. Here are the only guidelines you’ll need:
 FIND A BOOK AND START READING.
 Make your presentation at least 2 - 3 minutes long.
 Have it MEMORIZED. (Brief note cards are OK, but don’t just “read.”)
 Practice, practice, practice until it feels comfortable and smooth.
 Include “Something Special” in your report. (See below.)

Something Special
Anything you come up with would be fine, but here are some suggestions:

 Make a mobile with events, characters, and settings from your book.
 Create a poster that makes others want to read your book.
 Design a diorama.
 Come in costume as a character from your book.
 Make a puppet.
 Create a collage of images that represent your book.
 Paint a scene or setting.
 Build a model scene or setting.
 Create a sculpture.
 Try paper mache’.
 Make a pop up book.
 Design an alternate book cover.
 Make your presentation in PowerPoint form.
 Use Publisher or Word to create fliers or handouts about your book.
 Film your presentation in video format. Introduce it to us, and show it!
 Bring artifacts or objects important in your book.
 Create a timeline of events.

Name: ___________________________ will be ready to present on
____ Tuesday, June9th OR ____ Wedneday, June 10th
Wow! That’s a WHOLE MONTH to prepare! I KNOW I’ll be ready!
