Island Project 2009

Name________________ Partner’s Name_______________
Date____________ Due Date: October 12th

Imaginative Island Criteria Sheet

You and your partner will need to design an imaginative island map. Here is your chance for teamwork and imagination! This map is to be created using an interesting theme, and it must contain a variety of geographic features and locations which relate to a person, place or thing. A good reference to use would be our school atlases, your notes, or the internet. The final copy will be colored neatly and contain the required elements. Make sure spelling is correct. You and your partner will be graded on each of the required elements as well as overall visual appeal. This project is due Tuesday, October 12th. You will only have four class times to work on the project, so each time will need to be used wisely. If possible, it would be a great idea to meet with your partner sometime after school. You and your partner will share this project on Tuesday, October 12th or Wednesday, October 13th. Half of the class will present each day.

Required Elements
• Title (This should reflect your map theme).
• Latitude and longitude lines with clear labels (grid).
• Five labeled cities. One labeled capital city.
• Ocean is named.
• A scale that is clearly labeled.
• Compass Rose
• A legend, which include 6 or more symbols for the following features:* indicates a required feature:

bay cave *mountain *lake
*river stream railroad dam
inlet volcano airport
*peninsula bridge road

• Two or more regions from the following choices (The geographic features and regions should be named):

Swamp Mountains
Desert Plateau
Plains Grassland
Forest

Make a SMART choice when picking your partner. It would be great to work with a friend, but both of you will need to work together, and both of you will be presenting this project. The 4 class times that you will have to work on these are 9/28, 10/2, 10/5, & 10/9. It would be a good idea to exchange phone numbers with your partner. :0)

Planner's

Starting this Friday (9/25) I will be checking student planners. Parents need to sign planners on Thurdays (the same day that the R.A.H. homework is sent home).

R.A.H (Read At Home) & Reading Worksheet

R.A.H. Forest Ridge is starting a school wide at home reading program, R.A.H. Each Thursday, students will bring home a bookmark/reading log to track their reading at home. This will help encourage kids to become better readers and promote reading outside of school.

Today they took home their reading log and it's due on Tuesday. We didn't send them home on Thursday because we wanted them to all hear about it at the assembly. After today, students will always receive their reading log on Thursday and it will be due on Tuesday (so they won't HAVE to read on Wednesday's, but I do encourage it).

Students need to read for at least 20 minutes. They can read to themselves, to a parent and/or sibling, or a parent can read to them!

Reading Worksheet
We will be practicing/working together on the reading worksheets in class for a few weeks before I send home the reading worksheet. I will be sending home the first reading worksheet on Thursday, October 1st, along with the R.A.H. homework. I encourage students to work on these with parents. They will also be due the following Tuesday.

What a Great Looking Class! :0)

Headphones

It would be nice if each student had their own set of earbud headphones to use while on the computer. Last year we had so much trouble with the ones here at school breaking. If you are able to provide headphones, please label them and place them in a zip lock bag, which should also be labeled. Thanks for your help!

Water Bottles!

One more thing to add to your school list....a water bottle! Please bring a water bottle every day to school. I strongly encourage students to drink water throughout the day. I don't allow students to get up during class to use the fountain, so please be prepared to come each day with a water bottle in hand! Why should you bring a water bottle? Check out the link that's titled "Drinking Water and Children."
