Girlfriend Time :)

Here are some photos of my dear friend who had a baby last school year. I'm sure a lot of you remember, because you wanted your "floppy friday" and it wasn't coming until he arrived. He has changed so much!

This was taken not long before he arrived.

The day he was born!

What a happy baby!

Camping

We have been on one camping trip so far. It was a new place for us, called Belknap Springs. It was beautiful!

This was the "Secret Gardens."

We had a campsite really close to the river.

My brother and our cousin being silly!

Bbq

This summer we've had some fun bbq's at our house. Here are some photos of dear and old friends (some friends came from my kindergarten days!).

Our favorite Ranger had her baby :)

Plaque and Tree

Here are some photos of the gift that I got from a wonderful class! We planted a tree in the front corner of our yard and the plaque is right below the tree. I see it every day when I water our flowers :0)

Mrs. Koenig's summer so far....

Other than teaching summer school, I have been working on a lot of projects around our house and going to BBQ's (and having BBQ's). Today we are planting a tree and placing the wonderful plaque underneath the tree. I will post photos soon.

I just went to a bbq a few nights ago. Here is a photo of a great neighbor and of a dear friend that I grew up with :)

An exciting new summer recreation opportunity for Keizer youth is coming to three neighborhood parks in 2010. This first-year trial program will run 3 days per week for 9 weeks between mid-June and mid-August.

One day per week in each of 3 Keizer parks, trained staff members from Boys and Girls Club will lead neighborhood children in outdoor activities ranging from informal sports and games to nature study and art projects. The program will be open to Keizer area children in grades 1 through 6. Registration will be requied, and although the program itself is free, participants will be asked to purchase the $5 annual Boys and Girls Club membership; scholarships will be available.

Over the years, largely through their utility bills, Keizerites have made small donations designated for recreation. Until now, the City has not offered any recreation opportunities except an annual one-day skate park event. Currently amounting to about $3,000, these funds will allow the City of Keizer to contract with the Boys and Girls Club of Salem to staff the trial project.

Book Talk Recognition

Look at the 3 students who've completed their 5th book talk! Congratulations ladies!

Monday, January 25, 2010

It’s Time for C-Pod
Science Projects!

Each C-Pod Forest Ridge student will be responsible for a scientific experiment or demonstration. These projects will help in learning the process of Scientific Method: Hypothesis (or question), Materials and Procedure, Results, and Conclusion. These steps and how they apply to the projects will be taught at school. The projects will be scored for a speaking grade, as well as the science worksample.

To find an experiment suitable for the Science Fair, your student and your family can look through books or on the internet. The library has many student-friendly science books, and there are lots of websites you’ll find if you search “science projects” or “science fair.” Most of the science project work will need to be done at home, but we may be able to provide some supplies from the classroom, if needed.

Experiments are due in class ON, BUT NOT BEFORE, the morning of Thursday, February 18th. Each child will present to the class sometime during the day. We’ll show our displays to other classes on Friday, February 19th.

The attached sheet gives guidelines and expectations for this project.

Please call, email, or send a note if you have questions.

Have fun!

Mr. Jorgensen
Mrs. Kerr
Mrs. Koenig
Mrs. Randall
Mrs. Brown

Science Fair Project Guidelines

Your project for the science fair will have two parts:

1. A display of your actual experiment to be shown on top of your desk

2. A large poster-size page (see below, paper provided by the school) to hang from the front of your desk showing (WITH LABELS) the following:
a. Title of your science project + Your Name + Your Room
b. Scientific Inquiry Question or Hypothesis
c. Materials and Procedure
d. Results
e. Conclusion

Please be sure your poster is oriented VERTICALLY to be able to fit and hang across the front of your desk! A visual of a poster sample was sent home and emailed to families.

Be sure to give yourself enough time to thoughtfully and carefully complete your project. You will need time to practice your presentation for the class, as well. Read and use the Speech Practice Form to help you do your best. Turn it in to get full effort credit. If you have questions or problems as you work, PLEASE LET YOUR TEACHER KNOW. I can help you! Like any big project, this will be easier and more fun if you work on it a little at a time, rather than wait until the last minute. Here is a suggested timeline to help you stay on track:

Thurs. Jan. 21: *Take home Science Project information.
Mon. Jan. 25: *RETURN signed assignment notice (see below).
Fri. Jan. 29: *Have your project IDEA CHOSEN.
Sat. Jan. 30 - Fri. Feb. 5:
*GATHER materials, CONDUCT your experiment.
Sat. Feb. 6 – Wed. Feb. 10:
*COMPLETE your poster.
Thurs. Feb. 11 to Wed. Feb. 17:
*DEVELOP and PRACTICE your speech. Be ready to TEACH your classmates what you’ve learned.
*Fill out the Speech Practice Form.
Thurs. Feb. 18: *BRING your project, display, and Speech Practice Form to school this morning, ready to PRESENT. SMILE and be PROUD as everyone sees your great work!
Fri. Feb. 19: *Projects will go home today after we “show and tell” our work to the other classes.

We have read the science project guidelines. _______________
will be bringing his/her science project to school on Thursday morning, February 18th. By using the suggested timeline, we know that we can plan carefully and use the FULL FOUR WEEKS allotted to be well-prepared!

GREEN LUNCH TIME - Sustainable Practices

Forest Ridge Elementary
GREEN LUNCH TIME
Sustainable Practices

Reach ZERO WASTE!!

Win a Reusable SLURPEE!

Win a pass to the KROC Center!

What is ZERO WASTE?

Zero Waste means nothing is added to the waste stream (garbage).

A way to achieve this for “HOT LUNCH” students is to:

“Take what you want;

Eat what you take.”

Do not take more than you can eat from the self-serve bar. Eat all food, drink all beverage, and throw nothing into the waste stream and you can earn tickets to win a Slurpee or KROC Center pass!

LUNCHES FROM HOME

Please pack as close AS POSSIBLE to 100% Reusable Container Lunches instead of individually wrapped throw away items.

PACKAGING of items is a major use of natural resources such as petroleum products (plastic) that will deplete our fossil fuel reserves and mineral extraction to make aluminum and other packaging materials.

Buy food in bulk and use REFILLABLE/REUSABLE containers instead of disposables, like Capri Sun and other individually wrapped - made for lunch throw away items - that are not recyclable and have to be thrown away into the waste stream.

Thank you for helping us to reduce our carbon footprint and conserve our natural resources for future generations!

Book Exchange

~Winter Party~

On Friday, December 18th, (our last day of school before vacation), we will be having a little party at school!

The day will consist of wrapping gifts, the all school "Sing-a-Long," a book exchange and a movie (with treats).

I am asking your child to buy a book for the book exchange, keeping the expenses at no more that $5-$10 total. I want to emphasize the joy of giving to others, not expense. Please do not spend over $10. I would like each book to be "student" wrapped. :0) Please do no send the gifts (books) before Thursday, Dec. 17th.

I love teaching your children and look forward to having a wonderful time celebrating with each other!

Vivid Vocabulary Requirements - Sent home today

Vivid Vocabulary Requirements

• Your first vivid vocabulary word is _________________________________________________.
• You are to do the following by Friday, November 20th:
o Write the word large at the top of the paper (at least 2 inches). Use a dictionary first to write the definition under the word (if you can’t find the word in the dictionary, you can use the internet).
o Color the word so it stands out (block letters work well).
o Draw a picture showing a scene of what the word means (3-D pictures will get you more points-use scrap booking supplies, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, construction paper, Cheerios, etc to make it stand out)
o Write a sentence using your vocabulary word.( On the bottom)
o Practice saying your word, definition and sentence because you will need to make an oral presentation to the class after Thanksgiving Break.
o Bring your word in on Friday morning the teacher assistant will put it up on the “Vivid Vocabulary” board.

**It is important to be neat, careful and try to be creative as you work on this project. It is always a good idea to discuss this with your family and you can get some help from them on this one. I encourage family participation for this project. The main idea is to build your vocabulary so you will learn new and interesting words.

*Turn this paper into the homework basket on Friday with a parent signature.
